RFC 89 wins US Club Soccer Regional

Robert Ziegler
Jun 27, 2004  RFC 89 won the U14 division of the US Club Soccer Regional Sunday, with a 4-2 victory over Ironbound Soccer Academy of New York in the championship game in Downingtown, PA.

Two goals from Christian McLaughlin and one from Jean Carlos Cabrera fired RFC to a 3-1 halftime lead, and Sean Murnane scored the clincher before ISA pulled back a consolation goal late.

The win qualifies RFC for the US Club Soccer National Championship in late July at Cary, NC. The victory came on the heels of a 4-0 loss the previous day to Seacoast United, and standout defender Eric Zuehsow said the poor performance the previous day may have actually helped the team in the final (RFC qualifed on the virtue of winning two of three group-stage matches).

"We kind of fed off yesterday's result," Zuehsow explained. "Obviously we didn't play that great and it motivated us to come out and play the way we can, and to just take over the match."

RFC coach Judah Cooks, collecting his first major trophy for the club, said the team responded well to adversity.

"I just challenged them to play like I think they can and they know they can," Cooks said. "This is what you have to do to accomplish whatever goals you set in life and today was a good lesson in that. Everybody on this team deserves credit for winning this event, and I think Eric had an especially good tournament."

Cooks also mentioned Giorgio Tavecchio and Andy Rys with having contributed strongly as substitutes.
