Graham Oxley
RFC 89 Forward Graham Oxley selected to attend adidas ESP 2007

Rody McLaughlin
Jul 9, 2007  On July 4th, RFC 89 Forward Graham Oxley headed west to the campus of California Polytechnic University in Pomona, California (Cal Poly Pomona) the site of this year’s adidas Elite Soccer Program (adidas ESP). Oxley was selected as one of the top 136 rising high school seniors in the nation to attend the prestigious adidas ESP. Oxley is completing his final day of training today and is headed home tomorrow.

Attendance at ESP is by invitation only. Adidas employs a national panel of over 60 club and college coaches who scout players throughout the year. Once players are scouted, nominated and selected they are invited to attend. Approximately 80% have been involved in the ODP system in some form while other, like Oxley, are identified from other competitive situations such as major tournaments, league and State Cup matches.

Adidas established ESP in 1997 to create an environment where the best rising high school seniors and a few exceptional juniors could learn, train and compete together in front of major college coaches and professional. In addition, ESP is a unique opportunity for top players to further develop their skills and be recognized for their achievements.

Former ESP attendees include: DeMarcus Beasley, Jonathan Spector, three of the last four Herman Trophy winners and three of the last five number one draft picks in the MLS Super Draft.

What is adidas ESP like? On the evening of arrival, players are assigned to a “team” of 15 field players, two goal keepers and a staff coach. This year’s coaching staff includes notables such as Frank Yallop of the Los Angeles Galaxy, Dave Sarachan who was the head coach of the Chicago Fire and first assistant of the Men’s National Team under Bruce Arena. Over the next few days, the teams train together to demonstrate their skills and learn new ones. Competitive games then begin to showcase each player’s abilities and determine the team champion of adidas 2007. Finally, the players who have performed the best are selected to compete in the adidas 2007 all star games on the final day.

All expenses except travel to a Los Angeles area airport are covered by adidas. In addition, each player receives a kit containing several pairs of boots and training shoes, all necessary training gear, game uniforms shin guards etc etc. All are adidas brand of course.

More information on adidas ESP is available at: www.adidas-esp.com.

Congratulations to RFC 89’s Graham Oxley on the honor of being selected to attend this year’s adidas ESP. Oxley has committed to play his college soccer at Duke University starting in the fall of 2008.
