Jan 11, 2010 The Herndon RFC Arsenal flew south for the winter and took a break from the snow and freezing temperatures in Northern Virginia for the warm and sunny climate of South Florida in order to compete in the Orange Classic International Tournament during the last week of 2009. The Orange Classic is a major college showcase for players and the Arsenal took full advantage of the opportunity by winning their six-team bracket, going undefeated and surrendering only one goal versus teams from Ohio, New Jersey and Texas.
The Arsenal players showcased their skills in front of over 75 college coaches during the 4-day event. The marquee matchup took place on the third day as over 35 college coaches watched the match between the undefeated Arsenal and an unbeaten Dallas Sting team. Neither team had allowed a goal in their previous two matches and the winner was in the driver's seat to win the bracket. After a hard fought 80 minutes in front of the large audience, the Arsenal prevailed with a 1-0 victory. The next day, the Arsenal again came out focused and clinched the champions moniker with a tough 2-1 victory over a spirited Ohio Galaxies team.
When not showcasing their talents on the soccer field, the Arsenal enjoyed their spare time by taking advantage of some of the local attractions such as taking an airboat ride through the Everglades and spending a sunny afternoon at Hollywood Beach.
The trip was a fantastic finish to the year for the Arsenal. 2010 looks to be just as exciting.
