Feb 8, 2008 RFC defender Katie Vogel is the latest member of the club's class of 2008 to make a commitment to a NCAA Division I college program. Katie will be attending school and playing soccer at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA. Committing to Head Coach Jess Reynolds Atlantic 10 Program this week, Vogel said the school felt right from the first moment she stepped on campus. "I've taken a lot of visits over the past year and every school up until now had certain things I really liked and other things that didn't quite fit," she said. "However, when I got up to Philadelphia and saw St. Joe's I knew right away it was the place for me." Commenting on the Hawks program, Vogel added, "I really enjoyed the coaching staff and the team. The relationship between Coach Reynolds and her players is very close, like a family, and I knew I would be stepping into a great environment." Ranked by The Princeton Review's Best 366 Colleges in 2008, Saint Joseph's University advances the professional and personal ambitions of men and women by providing a demanding, yet supportive educational experience. One of only 142 schools nationwide with a Phi Beta Kappa chapter and AACSB business school accreditation, Saint Joseph's is home to 4,150 full-time undergraduates and 2,700 graduate, part-time, and doctoral candidates. RFC coach Mike Calabretta said "driven" is the first word he uses when describing one of his team's most consistent performers. "Katie suffered an acute ACL tear a little more than a year ago. At a time when many players would have hung up their boots, she put herself through one of the most rigorous rehabilitation programs and was back on the field in eight months. When she sets her sights on achieving something, you know its only a matter of time. Ultimately, that will make her a very good player at the next level." At 5'2", Vogel has always been one of the biggest players on the field for United in terms of presence and level of competitiveness she brings to the team. A no-nonsense defender, she possesses a first-class work rate, excellent technical ability, and an incredible love for the game. A senior at Bishop O'Connell High School, Vogel helped to led her team to a 20-0-0 record en route to a 2004 WCAC Championship title and adidas/NSCAA #1 National High School Ranking. The team finished as WCAC Champions in 2005 and 2006 and were WCAC Tournament Champions in 2004 and 2006. A top student-athlete in the club, she plans to major in physical therapy.
