Brook Chang Receives Gatorade Player of the Year Award

May 20, 2008
RFC United's Brook Chang has been named the 2007-08 Gatorade Player of the Year, announced by Gatorade and Rise Magazine this week.

Started in 1985 and now celebrating its third decade of honoring the nation's best high school student-athletes, the Gatorade Player of the Year award has become the most prestigious in the United States. Recipients are selected not only for their outstanding athletic excellence, but also for their academic achievement and exceptional character.

Chang, a senior at Bishop O'Connell High School along with RFC teammates Greer Drummond and Katie Vogel, finished her senior campaign with 58 points (23 goals and 12 assists), leading the Knights to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) championship game. A 1st Team Washington Post All-Met selection and a two-time 1st Team All-WCAC honoree, Chang concluded her four year career with 187 points (80 goals and 27 assists). A member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society, she has maintained a 3.98 GPA in the classroom.

Gatorade Player of the Year award alumni include Emmitt Smith, Peyton Manning, Kerri Walsh, Derek Jeter, Allyson Felix, and Abby Wambach. These athletes represent only a handful of exceptional talents who were first recognized by the Gatorade Player of the Year program before shining at the highest levels of competition.

RFC 89 Christian McLaughlin was named the 2007-08 Gatorade Player of the Year for boys soccer. This marks the first time in the club's history that both the male and female awards have been given to RFC players in the same year.
