Jul 15, 2008 In June of 2004, the Reston Football Club formed RFC United as part of the girls expansion program. The nucleus of the United comprised of players from a former USYS Region 1 Championship team along with WAGS Division 1 players from teams in both Virginia and Maryland. Competing in an age group that boasted four teams all ranked in the top twenty-five nationally (McLean Freedom Elite, Richmond Strikers, RFC United, and Vista Hotshots), RFC advanced to the Virginia State Cup Final Four from 2005-2008, finishing as finalists in 2007 and semifinalists in 2005, 2006, and 2008. A WAGS Division 1 Championship team, RFC United has experienced success at the league, domestic, and international levels. A three-time champion, eight-time finalist, and six-time semifinalist, the team advanced from the group stage in 19 of the 25 tournaments in which it participated. Most notably, United were finalists of the prestigious Disney Showcase and San Diego Surf Cup in 2007, ranked as the #1 and #2 girls tournaments in the United States by Soccer America. That summer, the team also captured first place honors at the TCIFA Women's International Festival of Football. Individual accolades include the 2007-08 Gatorade Player of the Year recipient, two SoccerBuzz Top 150 recruits, eight Washington Post All-Met standouts, Conference Player of the Year winners, and a host of 1st Team All-State and All-District selections. On the college landscape, RFC United represents a team with the most successful college placement and athletic scholarship mark in the history of the girls program. When asked about the successes of the United and its male counterpart, RFC 89, RFC Director Todd Hitt was quoted as saying, "The college placement success of RFC United and RFC 89 to date is unprecedented. Over the years we have had great success placing RFC players in major college programs. However, never before have we had such widespread interest in such a cross section of young men and women for one age group and never with such diversity among major college programs. Not just major soccer powers, but universities that are unparalleled in academic prominence as well." Placing 22 of its 23 players at NCAA Division I programs, including six players at top twenty-five schools, RFC United's youth soccer ranking as one of the best teams in the country is endorsed by the ACC, Atlantic 10, BIG EAST, Big South, Big Ten, Big 12, CAA, Ivy League, Mid-American, Missouri Valley, Patriot League, and SEC programs United players will join this fall. Since its inception, RFC United has represented its coaches, club, and state association with character and class and has been instrumental in raising the standard for the youth game both on and off the field.
