Michael CalabrettaPosition: Coach
mc568@georgetown.edu

Mike Calabretta, a fifth year assistant coach for the women's soccer program at Georgetown University, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to RFC.

In his time at Georgetown, Calabretta has helped guide the Hoyas to national prominence over the most successful period in program history. Within the past two seasons, the team has set records for most regular season wins (14), most BIG EAST wins (8), highest BIG EAST finish (2nd) behind Notre Dame, most shutouts (10), and a program best start of 8-0-2. Most notably, the team earned its first NCAA Tournament appearance and best overall regular season finish of 13-3-2.

Boasting a high-powered National Top 20 offense (2.54 goals per game) complemented by a talented National Top 20 defense (0.59 goals against per game) in 2008, the Hoyas made the BIG EAST Tournament for the fourth time in five seasons and hosted the quarterfinals for the first time in school history. The team advanced to the BIG EAST Championship semifinals for the first time in 2007 after defeating the #23 UConn Huskies (11/4/07).

This success earned Georgetown its first NSCAA/adidas #1 Regional Ranking and a series of first National Top 20 rankings by the NSCAA/adidas (#17), Soccer America (#16), SoccerBuzz Magazine (#19), and TopDrawerSoccer.com (#20) in addition to a number of National, Regional, and BIG EAST individual honors, highlighted by two All-Americans and the 2007 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year.

Calabretta, who holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National "A" License and a Premier Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), has been involved at the youth level since 2000.

Working in the Bethesda Soccer Club, Reston Football Club, and McLean Premier Soccer, Calabretta established himself early on as one of the area's prominent young coaches. In his first two years he collected a record of 81-17-10 highlighted by a European Championship in the world's third largest youth tournament.

In 2003, Calabretta helped start the girls program at Reston Football Club, which rapidly emerged as one of the best in the nation. By 2005, RFC was ranked as the #1 club in Virginia and #4 in Region I.

During that time, Calabretta has led his RFC Rovers and RFC United teams to state cup and tournament championship titles and Top 10 national rankings. His teams have enjoyed outstanding records of success and have been consistently ranked among the best in the country.

On the college landscape, Calabretta has had an excellent success rate placing players in conference programs that include the A-10, ACC, BIG EAST, Big South, Big Ten, Big 12, CAA, C-USA, Ivy League, MAAC, MAC, Missouri Valley, PAC-10, Patriot League, SEC, and Southern Conference. Since its inception, RFC has sent more than 200 players to some of the top NCAA Division I men's and women's soccer programs in the United States.

A member of the Region I Girls Olympic Development Program (ODP) staff, Calabretta has also been involved with the Maryland Olympic Development Program on the boys side, serving as a staff coach from 1999-2000. At both the ODP and club levels, he has helped to develop players for the U.S. Youth National and Regional teams.

In 2001, Calabretta took over as the Director of Player Development for the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Maryland, a position he held for two and a half years while also working as the Director of Sales and Sponsorships for the Maryland Soccer Foundation. He served as a member of the operations committee for the 2002 and 2003 U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships.

In addition to his college and club coaching experience, Calabretta coached at the Georgetown Preparatory School in 2004.

Calabretta was named as an Associate Staff Coach for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in January 2009.

Calabretta holds a bachelor's degree in Engineering Management from the University of Maryland and a master's degree in Sports Industry Management from Georgetown University, graduating summa cum laude.
